I presume you got wrong tag in your ports cvsup file. Isn't it 
RELENG_5_3? If so then it fetches all the ports in the state of when 
5.3 was released, and Gnome 2.8 due to freeze didn't hit the tree 
yet. The tag for ports should be a dot, literary "." if you want to 
fetch current upgrades.
