| No, there was no "gdm" file, I had to create it. This is a quite
| "young" machine btw., I installed FreeBSD RELENG_5 last week and
| compiled everything from an updated ports-tree.

Looks like there's a new login manager independent desktop file.  Edit
~/.dmrc, and set Language to the desired value:

[Desktop]
Language=de_DE.ISO8859-15
