gaim build error

Setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH is always a mistake.  The ports system ensures
you will never have to do that.  You should have looked at the original
error.  It probably said something to the effect that your pkg-config is
too old.  You have 0.8.0 installed, and you need 0.15.0.  Update
pkgconfig, and you should be set.
