When were the stable and release branches actually created?

I was going to suggest "check the re@ archives".  Unfortunately they 
only go back to 2013.

Perhaps someone who was on re@ before then still has the archives in 
their mailbox.

We also have archives of the cvs commits mailing lists.  They might shed 
some light.
