re-adding a replacement into a pool of mirrors

a drive in a 12x2tb array died and i have replaced it
# zpool status

i want to place da1s3 back in the pool, but
# zpool add -fn tank da1s3
would update 'tank' to the following configuration:

mirror
da6s1
da7s1
mirror
da8s1c
da9s1
mirror
da10s1
da11s1
da1s3
so zpool add would put it in the wrong place
clue please? thanks.
