I haven't heard about anyone planning to implement them or needing them.
But that doesn't imply any decision, of course.

Well, it could be argued that if anyone really needs that functionality he will
sure notice that it is missing even without the kernel messages.

I am not sure if I want these complexities (at the moment).
I can just keep the patch to myself :-)

No idea. It seems that it tries to get a wlan name at the very least (maybe
it's just a way to test if an interface is wireless). Maybe they explain why
they do it somewhere.
