I've get some problem after upgrading skype/linux-fc8 - blank square instead
of cyrillic letters. Removing /compat/linux/root/.font.cache-\* and reinstall
of linux-f8-fontconfig-2.4.2 helps for me.
Also you can check pathdir in /compat/linux/etc/fonts/fonts.conf
