There already is a driver for the nVidia 740M, directly from nVidia, you
just have to install it. Just run: pkg install nvidia-driver
And follow the on-screen instructions.

These things are beyond the scope of the FreeBSD Handbook, which is
about actually using FreeBSD. There are some additional 'books' and
'articles' provided here:
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/
For example, you mentioned being interested in just boot loaders. The
current boot model and the code for it are explained in the FreeBSD
Architecture Handbook:
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/arch-handbook/
