Add gnome_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf and notice that hald doesn't start correctly.

It should instead say that you should add:
gdm_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
avahi_daemon_enable="YES"
avahi_dnsconfd_enable="YES"
