Would it be useful/appropriate to remove news about betas and RCs?

I think it should stay, they are achievements made by the development  
team, to which people can see activity. Removing the items would mean  
that the period between 'news' gets longer, which might not be what we  
want.

I would enfavor that the entries stay..
