CONFERENCE SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT: CANON PRESS
Canon Press (http://www.canonpress.com/)
What makes a life less petty? At Canon Press, we want to encourage
intellectual, moral, and spiritual improvement in the lives of our
customers, friends, and family. One element of this is teaching sound
Christian doctrine. But doctrine by itself cannot make your life full
and rounded out. Canon Press seeks to recover a sense of the
beautiful by asking -- "What is true?" and "What is
good?" We believe sound theology always leads to the love
of beauty. For Christian parents, this poses a particular challenge:
How do you teach your kids to appreciate what is true, good, and
beautiful, in a world increasingly infatuated with all things modern.
With this in mind, Canon Press seeks to provide books and audio to
help parents rise to the challenge. Our vision is captured and
expressed in the book Angels in the Architecture: A Protestant Vision
for Middle Earth. This book cries out against the bland, purely
spiritualized Christianity to which so many have become accustomed.
Click here to read a sample. Here are a few of the books you
can find at Canon Press: Protocol Matters: Encouraging Social Graces
in Christian Homes and Schools. The everyday details of protocol
often seem mundane. But their impact in a community and in society is
profound. Sandra Boswell outlines the meaning and purpose of protocol
education, and describes ways of practicing it in the home and at
school, guiding the reader through all the basic protocol topics in
her new book Protocol Matters: Encouraging Social Graces in Christian
Homes and Schools. P.O. Box 8729, Moscow, ID. 83843 -

SPELLING MADE SIMPLE
Spelling Made Simple
(https://www.spellingmadesimple.com/Spelling%20Software/purchasesoftware.aspx?AFF=16)
Spelling is an integral part of our daily lives in our communication
with people around us. Spelling Made Simple is a program that
helps children and adults learn how to spell. A unique feature
of this program is that it can be customized to create interest in
the words, which need to be learned. These lists are made by
simply typing them into the program. Lists can also be created and
learned quickly by dragging and dropping or by copying and pasting
text into the software. One can also download lists from the site so
that won’t need to be created.
You can see and hear the word (based on the user's settings), and
then type the answer. This technique helps with the
memorization process and is a proven method in learning to spell. If
the answer is wrong it will go back into the queue and be retried.
This method allows words that need to be practiced on to be tested on
more often. Statistics are kept with the intention that a person can
review improvement and see what needs to be worked on.
The use of this spelling program will help the speller gain
confidence and power over words. As parents know, children
learn differently. Some are visual learners, some learn best through
audio. With Spelling Made Simple children can work at their own
pace and have meaningful hands-on experiences that teach with a
variety of learning styles. The speller will learn to become
independent and transform into a motivated speller, as they feel
their self-empowerment.
You will find many testimonials about the wonderful things this
product has done to improve spellers across the nation on their
website Spelling Made Simple
(http://www.spellingmadesimple.com/?AFF=16) I wanted to point
out one testimonial in particular that is quite an incredible
story. A homeschooling mom, Michelle Horton used this product
as a tool for her son who was attempting to be in the National
Spelling Bee. Six of the last 10 National Spelling Bees were
won by homeschoolers.
She purchased the program for her son. She wrote about their
experience: “The summer of Jonathan’s 8th grade and final
shot at the NSB, we tweaked our studying yet one final time. We
were attempting to go through the dictionary and learn as many words
that were left as possible. Using the recordings had become
cumbersome and I wanted to find a computer program that would allow
us to put our own words into it and have my voice giving all of the
pieces he could ask at the NSB. After much trial and error, we
discovered a great product called Spelling Made Simple. It far
exceeded our expectations.
I recorded 13,339 words for him to study. He worked as hard as
he could. He wasn't simply working to try to WIN the bee,
he just wanted to be able to walk away and say, ‘I couldn't
have worked any harder!’” Jonathan was
disappointed to not win the NSB, but he was not totally
devastated. He tied for eighth place and showed great character when
he didn't allow his disappointment to interfere with his support
of the remaining spellers on the stage. Ironically, there were
only two words in the entire bee that he didn't know and he
received one of them. Yet, he walked away knowing he could not
have done any more to prepare.
Jonathan has truly shown great growth throughout his participation in
the National Spelling Bee. I encourage you to purchase the
Spelling Made Simple program, and to purchase products from Hexco
Academic, specifically the Verbomania and New Nats Notes. Begin
a program of studying word roots from Greek and Latin. Get a
copy of the Webster's Third New International Dictionary, either
in paper form or on CD-rom. Be encouraging but realistic at the
same time. Do not hesitate to help them in their goal but
realize that unless they REALLY want it and pursue much of this on
their own, they probably will not reach the NSB. Most of all,
remember that some of their best growth may not come when they
"win". After all, isn't character growth more
important than a trophy?”
