Although mentioned in the 5.3R release notes, the text in chapter
16.11.2 of the Handbook still refers to GNU tar as the (only) tar to use:
" ... The GNU version of tar, which FreeBSD utilizes, supports remote
devices using the same syntax as rdump ... "

This doesn't seem to apply to bsdtar:
