While setting up xdm for remote logins the documentation at http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-xdm.html section 5.6.3.1 Xaccess states that the Xaccess file by default allows all connection as long as you open for connections in xdm-config. I had to uncomment the following line to be able to logon:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xaccess
