.so macro in man pages

hi there,

groff allows manpage linking using `.so' macro like this:

.so man1/foo.1

however, this does not seem to work under freebsd:

<standard input>:1: can't open `man1/foo.1': No such file or directory

what is proper way of linking manpages in our world?
