No,  there's no LED flashing of SDD when entering to boot the initial modules.

Really no boot with that line in loader.conf, whereas it could boot 
previously?  Possibly it is booting, but you can't see because the 
console is gone?

The console should come back once amdgpu is loaded.  If not, try 
debugging over ssh.
