CFLAGS= -O1
COPTFLAGS= -O1
in /etc/make.conf
But I tried commenting these options out - same result:
cc -O2 -pipe -I/usr/src/sbin/fsck_ffs -I/usr/src/sbin/fsck_ffs/../mount -DRESCUE -std=gnu99 -Wsystem-headers -Werror -Wall -Wno-format-y2k -Wno-uninitialized -Wno-pointer-sign -c pass5.c
