device snp build broken?

Small status update: I've just committed it to HEAD. As said in my
previous email, it's not 100% finished yet, but it should already be
good enough to do most basic things. It's always better than having a
broken driver sitting in the tree.

I really hope someone else gets tempted to fix the error condition
handling, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions about the
code or if you feel tempted to continue my work. Thanks!
