With 12.0 RPI2 image on  a 1.1 RPI2:

    echo "f" > /dev/led/led1

Results in console messages:

    gpio0: Stray irq 35 disabled
    gpio0: Stray irq 35 disabled
    gpio0: Stray irq 35 disabled

One message appears each time the red LED turns on.
