Steps for reproducing:

1. Create device.map file:
# cat device.map 
(cd0) /test/smartos-latest.iso

2. Create grub.cfg:
# cat grub.cfg file:
multiboot /platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix /platform/i86pc/kernel/amd64/unix
-B smartos=true,console=ttyb
module /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive
type=rootfs name=ramdisk
boot

3. Load VM kernel and rootfs ramdisk:
# grub-bhyve -m device.map -r cd0 -M 4096M test < grub.cfg

4. Try to start VM:
# bhyve -m 4096M -s 3,ahci-cd,/test/smartos-latest.iso -s 31,lpc -l
com1,/dev/nmdm0A -l com2,/dev/nmdm1A test
