One EFI partition with GRUB which chain loads either hd(9) on the same disk or
hd(5) on the second disk.

What I'm starting to think is that it may be GRUB chain loading's fault.
I may try tomorrow to reinstall on SSD, but this time allowing to create a
second EFI partition there and then chain loading bootx64.efi on EFI instead of
boot1.efi on ufs.
