make kernel and buildworld both fail (SOLVED)

I tried a patch to eliminate xhci timeouts.  Maybe that did something
strange.  After the patch, I could not load the cpuctl module.  So, I
updated source and started from scratch.  I think I may have cvsup'd
some of the 9.0 release code?????

Anyway, all is OK, now.

I see lots of xchi timeouts on startup.
