I can see that happening during portupgrade on my 
7.0-BETA1 FreeBSD 7.0-BETA1 #0: Sat Oct 27 04:15:22 CEST 2007 
amd64 UP-machine as well. Situation has been improved by using
SCHED_ULE instead of SCHED_4BSD .

My swap space remains untouched, I have got 2 GB of RAM.

Is there - perhaps - some way to tune down gcc's CPU greediness?
