 I had the same problem booting FreeBSD/AMD64 (6.1 & 6.2 RELEASE) from
 the install CD on a HP dv8000 system.
 
 I found a work around, in which if I press the spacebar until I see on
 the screen that it is loading the kernel (i.e. /boot/kernel/kernel),
 it will boot into the installer.  After you get the system installed,
 it won't have any problems booting off the HD.
