A workstation should be able to use a workstation class
monitor.  Many, probably most, workstation class CRT monitors
require sync-on-green.  A "SVGA cable" (I'm assuming you mean
a HD-15 connector) is not an option if the monitor does not
have an HD-15 input.  Workstation monitors tend to have BNC
or 13W3 connectors.  HD-15 connectors are used on pee-cee
class monitors and do not provide the bandwidth or shielding
of BNC connectors.  And users wanting a digital connection
for a LCD are also out of luck.  A modern workstation should
provide at least DVI-I, and sync-on-green.  A higher end
workstation should add dual link and multi-head.

The Tyan 2865 is mostly a workstation class board, except for
the pee-cee class video and the pee-cee class buggy firmware.
