The xorg "nv" driver works great - at the cost of not
being able to return to console-land.

The nvidia driver works horribly. Molasses in winter
comes to mind. The moused daemon starts running hard
and the processor runs at 100%.

I'm hoping the problem is some dumb mistake on my
part. I'm hoping it will be apparent to you all.
Here's what I have:

/boot/loader.conf:
linux_load="YES"
nvidia_load="YES"

/etc/rc.conf:
...
linux_enable="YES"
moused_enable="YES"
moused_flags="-3 -E 100"
moused_type="auto" # "auto" is the default
sshd_enable="YES"
usbd_enable="YES"
...

uname -a:
FreeBSD carmen.opera 5.4-BETA1 FreeBSD 5.4-BETA1 #0:
Fri Mar 18 09:28:57 UTC 2005
root at harlow.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC
 i386

EQUIPMENT
HP Pavilion zv5000 (same family as the famous Compaq
R3000z.)
Processor: XP-M.

And in that vein, here's `head device.hints`:
...
# my stuff:
hint.atkbd.0.flags="0x9"
hint.acpi.0.disabled="1"
# ========
...
