OpenOffice (Linux binary) blows up if not run by root

OS: FreeBSD 5.3 Release; 64-bit AMD64; kernel built
with Linux compatibility
Application: OpenOffice 2.0 Linux
Linux JDK 1.4

When I start OpenOffice as a non-root user, OpenOffice
blows up at the very first touch of the keyboard. 

If I run OpenOffice as root, it is stable. 

Would one of you wise folks tell me how to remedy
this?
