3ware cards work in AMD64 port?

True.  If the client wants and is willing to pay for a hardware RAID
card, then get him a hardware RAID card.  :)

I've only played with and researched gmirror(8), and it can mirror the
boot partition.  Both disks in a mirror can be made bootable as well.
