thermal/power/fan monitoring?

Is there any way to access the various system monitor items on these
systems, such as fan speed, thermal status, etc?

I realize that the systems are all different but it seems possible
that in many cases these things are accessible via SMbus, and that a
table-driven scheme might be able to detect, for example, fan failure
in a lot of cases.
