ghostscript 8.63 unrecoverable error

After latest gs update I cannot open any PostScript file.
The error message is typically this:

I use the same version of gs on FBSD 7.1-prerelease and 8.0-current i386 with
no problems.

Has anybody seen this error on alpha?
Is it really an alpha issue, or is the problem in something else?
