Thats ancient remains of the days that disks had RUN/STOP switches.
Carryover from the DEC VAX days.

Can you get me a SHOW CONF and a SHOW DEV from the >>> prompt?

You could have an oldish CDROM drive that does not understand CDR / CDRW
discs.
