I use the following scripts to help me with this problem on a X220:
http://www.alogt.com/freebsd/XonX220
starts X for me and
http://www.alogt.com/freebsd/setbrightness
is used to adjust brightness.
You might have to adjust them as some modules might be already loaded
at your machine. These scripts work for me on 10.
