On my ThinkPad R51 I had to put acpi_video_load="YES" in
/boot/loader.conf, in /etc/sysctl.conf I added hw.acpi.reset_video=0
and hw.syscons.sc_no_suspend_vtswitch=1.
Before that, I had the same symptoms you described above.
I'm using FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE.
If I put radeondrm in the kernel, ACPI stops working.
If I don't, xorg will load radeon.ko, but complain about
not being able to enable DRI:
|[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"
|(II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
|(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.
