If you use a ThinkPad you can use acpi_ibm(4) in conjunction with devd to 
map Fn+F3 (RELENG_6 or above needed, though).

It contains a modified version of the patch that additionally fixes 
commandline parsing of --debug (segfault if specified without additional 
args) and --skip (didn't work at all) and has some reworded error messages.
