Peter Bell is executive vice president for programs and services at
Autism Speaks. He oversees the foundation's government relations and
family services activities and also serves as an advisor to the science
division. Prior to his role at Autism Speaks, Bell was president and CEO
of Cure Autism Now, which merged with Autism Speaks in February 2007.
Peter joined Cure Autism Now in 2004 following a successful 12-year
marketing career at McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals, a
member of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies. As president and
CEO, Peter led Cure Autism Now through a tremendous growth period and
brought the foundation's funding total to more than $39 million. In
addition, Peter enhanced the foundation's research, education and
outreach initiatives and expanded the foundation's treatment portfolio.
Peter and his wife, Liz, reside in New Jersey with their three children.

"Solving the Autism Puzzle Through Science"

Although autism was first characterized 65 years ago, it took almost 50
years before mainstream scientists to take it seriously. In 1995, two
national autism groups, Cure Autism Now (CAN) and the National Alliance
for Autism Research (NAAR), formed to radically change the way autism
was viewed and researched. Over the following decade, a vibrant field of
autism researchers developed thanks to a significant increase in the
pool of funding from both the public and private sectors. In 2005, a new
organization was founded, Autism Speaks, which brought even more
awareness and financial resources to the autism fold. Autism Speaks have
since merged with CAN and NAAR. This session will provide an update on
the current field of autism research, how it is structured, where it is
going and identify some of the promising leads. The speaker will provide
an update on the Autism Speaks Science program as well as detail the
current strategic planning process that is underway within the
Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC).


Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.

Dr. Teresa Bolick is a licensed psychologist with a special interest in
neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism, Asperger Syndrome, and
other autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Bolick graduated from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Psychology.
She holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology from Emory University.
Dr. Bolick provides evaluation and treatment to children, adolescents,
and their families. She consults frequently to schools in New Hampshire
and Massachusetts. She is an enthusiastic speaker, presenting workshops
for parents, paraprofessionals, and professionals across the nation. Dr.
Bolick is the author of Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Helping

"From Acquaintance to BFF: The Development of True Friendship in
Individuals with ASD"

By adolescence, many individuals with ASD have acquired the skills
needed to meet their basic needs and to negotiate the superficial social
interactions of everyday life. It is more difficult for them to move
toward the "experience sharing" that Gutstein and others describe as the
basis for true conversation and friendship. This workshop will focus on
the skills necessary to move from instrumental communication to true
conversation, from acquaintanceship to close friendship.

Workshop participants will be able to:
1. differentiate between instrumental communication and experience
sharing
2. identify the self-regulatory and communication skills needed to
support friendship
3. explain the contribution of social capital to true friendship


Keri Bowers, Filmmaker & Mother of a Son with Autism

hands-on work with kids and adults, parenting a child with special
needs, and full-time work in the non-profit sector and advocacy have

innovational ideas for interventions for disabled individuals. "Normies"

Keri Bowers, mother, advocate and film director, is very excited to
discuss her new workbook "Mapping Transitions To Your Child's Future", a
long overdue resource for parents of children with autism and other

Jeff Bradstreet, M.D., FAAFP

and a treating physician at the International Child Development Resource
Center in Florida, adjunct professor of nutritional neuroscience and
child development at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, adjunct
professor of neurosciences at Stetson University, and a clinical
consultant to the University of California Davis MIND Institute. A
versatile man in the research and treatment of autism spectrum disorder,
he has published landmark studies with regard to the role of mercury and
measles virus in autism, such as A Case Control Study of Mercury Burden
in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, published in the Journal
of American Physicians and Surgeons, as well as speaking before Congress
and the IOM. His 11-year old son, Matthew, is recovering from autism. Dr
Bradstreet is the founder of a special school for children with autism
that encompasses biological, behavioral, sensory, auditory and speech
therapies into a combined program.
Presentation Details	 
"Reversing Autism Using Biomarker Directed Biological Interventions"

Recent advances in laboratory methods allows us to have greater insight
into the underlying processes which generate the autism symptoms.
Dealing effectively with these biological problems leads to faster and
more effective recover for the children. This discussion will include
the dramatic findings from an international study which indicates
serious problems with the immune system and the presence of increased
amounts of oxidative damage of RNA and cell membranes. These serious
issues need effective therapies and parents and clinicians need to know
they have done enough to correct the abnormal biology.


	

Anita Bratt, N.D.

Dr. Anita Bratt is a licensed naturopathic doctor (ND) practicing in
North Vancouver, B.C. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree in
Biology in 1994, Dr. Bratt attended the National College of Naturopathic
Medicine in Oregon and Bastyr University in Washington, before
completing her Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine in 2005 at the Boucher
Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster, B.C. Dr. Bratt
graduated first in her class and was honored with the award for academic
excellence.

Dr. Bratt is the mother of three children. After her oldest son was
diagnosed with autism, she developed a specific interest in the research
and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. She uses a biomedical and
Defeat Autism Now! approach in treating ASD, along with naturopathic
therapies. Dr. Bratt hosted the first Outreach Clinic for Autism & ADHD
in Western Canada in conjunction with The Great Plains Laboratory. Dr.
Bratt is a published author of numerous autism-related articles. She is
a member of the British Columbia Naturopathic Association and the
Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors, and is board-certified in
Acupuncture and Chelation Therapy.

"Heavy Metals in Autism: Toxicity and Effective Treatment"

Heavy Metals such as mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum, arsenic and other
heavy metals are continuing to increase in our environment adding to the
toxic burden of our children. Pollution, cooking utensils, food,
deodorants, toothpaste, pesticides, amalgam fillings and animal feed are
just some of the sources that find their way into our bodies. Children
with Autism have impaired immune and detoxification systems allowing the
accumulation of these metals in their tissues including skin, bones,
brain, kidneys and other organs which can be expressed in a variety of
neurological, behavioral, learning impairments as well as physical
symptoms.

This presentation will discuss ways of reducing the toxic burden through
the use of natural treatments that are safe and effective. Several case
studies will be presented showing successful treatment with nutritional,
dietary and other interventions.

Learning Objectives:

1) The participant will be able to identify the major toxins in the
environment and what they can do to reduce heavy metal exposure.

Scott Clack, B.Sc., N.D.

(Honours) from the University of Toronto in 1981, and a Doctorate of
Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University in Seattle 1997. He has
been in clinical practice since November 1997 and has been specializing
in the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders ("ASD") for more than six
years. Scott Clack has participated in and has spoken at numerous
lectures, workshops, conferences and training events in both Canada and
the United States. He was voted Naturopathic Doctor of the year in 2005
by his Ontario peers and has treated over 200 patients with Autism
Spectrum Disorders. He is also one of the lead physicians involved in
The Great Plains Laboratory, Inc. practitioner mentoring program in
Canada.
Presentation Details	 
"What's Going On? Common findings of biomedical tests on Canadian ASD
children."

Following 3 years of work as a Defeat Autism Now! practitioner, some
interesting trends in test results have been noted. The presentation
will review the test results of 25 ASD children randomly chosen from my
practice in southern Ontario. The tests that are frequently recommended
for each child include: Organic Acid Test, Comprehensive Stool Profile,
Urinary Peptide test and IgG Food Allergy test, Hair Elements analysis,
CBC, serum ferritin and serum Prealbumin. The discussion of these
results will provide parents and new practitioners with insights to the
interpretation of the results and consequent approaches to treatments.
The findings should direct more parents and practitioners to use testing
to direct treatment and avoid stereotyped treatments which may not be
necessary for every child. 

Bruce M. Gale, Ph.D.

psychologist who began working in autism in the mid-1970's. After
graduating UCLA, he completed graduate training at Florida State
University (1985) and was honored to present his research on
self-injurious behavior at the First National Conference of Powerful
Data-Based Systems for Treating Autism in 1980. He completed his
internship and advanced fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital and was
appointed as a Fellow in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School from
1982-84. As former Chief Psychologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in
Los Angeles, Dr. Gale implemented no-cost assessment programs to
identify individuals with developmental disorders who had been
misdiagnosed with mental illness. Since the mid-90's, he has developed
and conducted treatment programs employing technology to increase
motivation and improve treatment outcome. His project for the past
several years with children and teens has been LUNCH Groups, a
multi-modal (FUN!) treatment program. Dr. Gale frequently conducts
independent evaluations with students, has served as an expert witness
in numerous cases, and offers CE courses as an APA-approved provider,
both online and in person. Dr. Gale's work using technology in autism
was highlighted in the film documentary, "Normal People Scare Me." His
company, BehaviorTech Solutions, Inc has developed online multi-rater
behavior assessment and treatment tools to help teams quickly identify
areas of priority and determine progress, plus help individuals with
special needs improve coping and resilience. He consults to programs
through the California Department of Education, is division technology
chair for the California Psychological Association, and teaches Abnormal
Psychology at American Jewish University.
Presentation Details	 
"Learning, Understanding, Negotiating, Communicating, and Helping:
Reviewing 8 years of LUNCH Groups, a (FUN!) Multi-Modal Treatment
Program for Improving Student Social Functioning"

Individuals with HFA, AS and related challenges often require treatment
to help their social functioning, but just as frequently resist or avoid
such intervention. Individual therapy is less than ideal, since an
adult, a few to several times the age of the client, makes for a poor
role model. This presentation will describe the LUNCH Groups program,
where over 90% of students have reported they enjoy participating and
three quarters of parents report meaningful improvement in child
behavior. We will review the simple yet effective initial assessment
process and cover program highlights, such as computer animation
projects, three types of raffles that improve behavior, parent support
components, behavior generalization, plus focus on eating and manners.
The program's five core elements include: 1) Executive Functioning; 2)
Pragmatic Social Skills; 3) Pragmatic Language Skills; 4) Academic
Readiness; and 5) Environmental Awareness. Videos and case examples will
supplement lecture material to illustrate these principles in practice.

whose private practice is based in Baltimore, MD. He is the author or
co-author of articles and book chapters on the needs of adults with
autism spectrum disorder, the school-to-work-transition process and
analysis and intervention of problematic behavior. He has presented
nationally and internationally on these topics.

He currently serves on numerous professional advisory boards, including
the Autism Society of America, MAAP Services, NJ COSAC and ASPEN. In
2002 Dr Gerhardt became the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the
Organization for Autism Research. Previous professional positions
include serving as the Executive Director Nassau Suffolk Services for
Autism and an appointment as Research Asst. Professor at the Rutgers
University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology where
he served as the Director of the Division of Transition and Adult
Services at the Douglass Developmental Disabilities Center. It was in
this capacity the he co-founded the Douglass Group, a social skills and
support service for adults with Aspergers Disorder or High Functioning
Autism. Dr. Gerhardt received his doctorate from the Rutgers University
Graduate School of Education.

Today, professionals, families and learners with ASD are beginning to
redefine the outcomes of the transition process beyond simple job
placement to focus on career development and measures of personal
competence and life satisfaction. To this end, this presentation will

ANY AGE in support of desirable and individualized employment outcomes
with attention to assessment, community based training, employment
development, job-related social skills, and quality of life concerns.

autistic spectrum disorders. She has been a Defeat Autism Now!
practitioner for 6 years. Her book, Nourishing Hope for Autism, and her

biochemistry of ASDs and the role of nutrition to restore health. She
presents at leading autism conferences, hosts multiple radio programs,
writes for autism publications, and teaches "Cooking To Heal" cooking
classes. Julie has a private nutrition practice and radio show in San
Francisco and works with clients from around the world.

Julie's live presentations include information for practitioners and
parents. She presents complex information in ways that are easy to
understand and apply at home, while providing scientific data so

of diet and nutrition intervention for their patients and children - and

Presentation Details	 
"Nourishing Hope for Autism"

This presentation will discuss the common autism diets used by parents
and practitioners in the field of biomedical intervention for autism
including GFCF, Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Feingold Diet, Body Ecology
Diet, and the low oxalate diet. Julie will help audience members
determine how to choose a diet most suited for an individual and how to
customize it over time.

This presentation will include background information regarding the
biochemistry of the body, the gut-brain connection, and autism as a
whole body disorder. This session will explain how dietary intervention
helps ameliorate symptoms and engage healing, and will focus on
nourishing children. For autism, dietary intervention means eliminating
problematic foods, and adding nutrient-rich healing foods. Julie will
discuss nutrient dense foods and how to make them more digestible,
including the concepts of broths, vegetables, grass-fed animal protein
and fats, soaking grains and seeds, and fermented and probiotic rich
foods. From her clinical experience, Julie understands that many
children with autism are very finicky eaters so she will provide food
and meal ideas that are nutrient dense and kid-friendly.

William Shaw, Ph.D.

biochemistry and human physiology from the Medical University of SC. He
is board certified in the fields of clinical chemistry and toxicology by
American Board of Clinical Chemistry. He has supervised large
endocrinology, nutritional biochemistry, and toxicology and immunology
departments at the CDC and Smith Kline Laboratories, and was a director
at Children's Mercy Hospital. Dr. Shaw is the Director of The Great
Plains Laboratory, Inc. for Health, Nutrition, and Metabolism, a
laboratory specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic
disorders of adults and children. He is author of "Biological Treatments
for Autism and PDD" and a frequent speaker at autism conferences
worldwide.
Presentation Details	 
"Promising new insights, therapies, and tests for autism and PDD"

A number of genetic abnormalities have been found in individuals with
autistic spectrum disorders at greater incidence rates than in normal
people. Many of these genetic factors are called single nucleotide
polymorphisms or SNPs (pronounced SNIPS) of the deoxyribonucleic acid
(DNA) in the genes that regulate folate, B-12, methylation reactions,
and sulfur amino acid metabolism in a complex interrelated metabolic
pathway. Furthermore, the presence of certain SNPs makes the individual
more susceptible to vitamin deficiencies and exposure to toxic
chemicals. Household products such as cleaners, paints and solvents,
lawn and garden care, automotive products, pool chemicals, and health
and beauty aids, are usually the main source of exposure since they are
prevalent in the environment. We suggest patients can reduce their
exposure by making small changes in their lifestyle and purchasing
habits, such as not using pesticides and avoiding cosmetics and
toiletries with synthetic fragrances. Several studies have now confirmed
that many of these products may be involved in causing autistic spectrum
disorders (ASD) and some of the genetic factors that increase
vulnerability of ASD people to toxic chemicals have been identified. The
use of this new information in helping the treatment of ASD will be
emphasized. 

Learning objectives:
1. The participant will learn about common genetic variations called
SNPs that are common in autism and why these variations make the
individual more susceptible to exposure to toxic chemicals and
nutritional deficiencies.
2. The participant will understand the role of a wide range of toxic
chemicals in inducing autism and how to reduce exposures and how to
detoxify the chemicals that are in the body.


Stephen Shore, Ed.D.

with strong autistic tendencies" Dr. Shore was viewed as "too sick" to
be treated on an outpatient basis and recommended for
institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much help from his
parents, teachers, and others, Dr. Shore recently (2008) completed his
doctoral degree in special education at Boston University with a focus
on helping people on the autism spectrum develop their capacities to the
fullest extent possible. In addition to working with children and
talking about life on the autism spectrum, Stephen presents and consults
internationally on adult issues pertinent to education, relationships,
employment, advocacy, and disclosure as discussed in his book Beyond the
Wall: Personal Experiences with Autism and Asperger Syndrome, Ask and
Tell: Self-advocacy and Disclosure for People on the Autism Spectrum,
and the newly released Understanding Autism for Dummies. A board member
of the Autism Society of America and president emeritus of the
Asperger's Association of New England, Stephen serves for the Board of
Directors for Unlocking Autism, the Autism Services Association of
Massachusetts, MAAP, and the College Internship Program. Dr. Shore is on
the US Autism and Asperger Association Advisory Board.
Presentation Details	 
"Examining Five Promising Approaches for Autism Spectrum Disorders"

Noting that there has been no true comparison between educational /
behavioral / developmental approaches for working with children on the
autism spectrum, qualitative research was initiated to investigate the
following about Applied Behavioral Analysis, TEACCH, Daily Life Therapy,
Miller Method, and DIR. Through written correspondence and face to face
interviews, the developers of these varied approaches were queried on
how they define autism, think about children with autism, and would
handle carefully designed case studies representing the spectrum of
autism. 

Some preliminary findings suggest that current definitions of autism are
lacking and a more multi-dimensional approach is needed, some techniques
are applicable across approaches, and a general sense that people with
autism have something valuable to contribute to the community as a
whole.

Lauren W. Underwood, PhD

PhD in biology (developmental neurobiology) from Tulane University.
Following graduation, she was awarded a National Institute of Health

Underwood is the parent of a child recovering from autism, and as a
result of this, became a health educator and biomedical consultant for
families of autistic children. Dr Underwood is concurrently employed as
a Senior Staff Scientist for SSAI, Inc. supporting NASA. Additionally,
Dr. Underwood is a C.A.R.D., Center for Autism and Related Disorders,
IRB Board member, a USAAA, US Autism and Asperger Association, Advisory
Board (Scientific) member, and a scientific advisor for the
International Hyperbarics Association. Dr. Underwood has recently
presented a poster on the "Best Practices" approach for the treatment of
autism that that was presented at the 2008 Pangea Conference (Pediatric
Integrative Medicine Conference (PIMC) for the Integrative Pediatrics
Council. Dr. Underwood was also honored and privileged to be invited to
co-author several chapters in a book, recently published book by Dr.
Stephen Shore, titled, Understanding Autism for Dummies.

"A "Best Practices" Model for Treating Autism: ABA & Biomedical
Therapies Implemented Together Facilitate Optimal Outcomes"

Treatments grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis as well as biomedical
approaches have individually helped provide effective treatment models
for autism. However, in developing a "Best Practices" Model, these
interventions must work together to provide the best possibilities for
optimal outcomes. Therefore, support for the "Best-Practices" approach
which incorporates a behavioral-biomedical treatment model for autism is
defined. 

Given the significant volume of research on the outcomes of treatments
based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) it is clear
that ABA is a necessary treatment for children with autism. ABA is the
application of more than 70 years of scientifically proven principles of
learning and motivation to the solution of problems of social
significance, autism being one such problem. Several decades of
scientific research have conclusively proven the effectiveness of ABA
with children with autism. Substantial research has demonstrated that
for a significant proportion of children with autism, the optimal
outcome is possible: everyday functioning that is indistinguishable from
that of typically developing peers. As such, treatment approaches
grounded in ABA are now considered to be at the forefront of therapeutic
and educational interventions for children suffering from this disorder.
Research also supports a biomedical etiology for autism. While studies
are being conducted to identify exact biomedical pathways and their
scientific basis, case studies based upon practical applications of this
research suggest that the likelihood of successful outcomes improves
when biomedical interventions are concurrently used to treat medical
co-morbid conditions present in individuals diagnosed with autism. These
conditions can include digestive disorders, concurrent
neuroinflammation, and/or immune system dysregulation. These require
medical attention, and if not addressed can affect developmental
outcomes and success in behavioral interventions. Consequently, there is
a growing number of parents and practitioners who utilize medically
based treatment options - including modified diet, supplementation and
detoxification protocols - to treat individuals diagnosed within the
autism spectrum. 

The "Best Practices" Model suggests that if indicated, biomedical
interventions should be utilized in an attempt to stabilize the child's
medical symptoms to achieve an improved state of health concurrently
with implementing behavioral therapies. By doing so, the child's
learning potential is maximized, thereby expediting acquisition of
skills that can be taught using the methodology of Applied Behavior
Analysis. Cases now demonstrate successful outcomes with an acceleration
of skill acquisition within an ABA therapy program when biomedical
issues are also addressed and treated.
