FYI:

The dns/nss_mdns port makes a start towards wrapping the glibc 
NSDB_HOSTS stubs, though it doesn't do this in a generic way at the 
moment, and it is currently development quality code.

This code could eventually be forward-ported to 
src/lib/libc/net/nss_compat.c.
I'm working on other things now, so I might not get around to this.
