It could at least keep nearly the same performance in the UP and MP case.

BTW, we saw "huge" performance increase when switched to FreeBSD 
5-STABLE (around 5.3, or 5.4, don't know exactly) and from bind 9.2.x to 
9.3.1.

Huge means about a 100% drop in the CPU usage with the same qps 
patterns. (~80% -> ~40%)

Playing with compiler options (and compilers!) can also give you some 
extra performance. The best was gcc 3.4, gcc 4.0 did not bring any 
benefit and icc 8.x was slower than gcc 4.0 generated code.

BTW, ISC says that the next major version (9.4) will be about performance.
