I'm guessing that at this point in the boot process, geom
hasn't reached the stage of being able to look at events
and do something with them.

I suspect that replacing
        g_waitidle();
with
        if (sc->type != MD_PRELOAD)
                g_waitidle();
will fix this problem; I'll test and commit this later.
