excited by the FSM->native code compiler and automated code
refactoring software you're planning to work on.

Cool. I don't want to scare you away from ash, but this is a
piece of code that really needs a maintainer. So if you're
interested, this might be a good place to start, er, refactoring. ;-)

Off the top of my head, the -h functionality supported by df and
ls falls into this category. The implementation is somewhat
nontrivial, and other tools could benefit from the feature.
