Actually people use it also to split a big Ethernet segment into
pieces, but use router, not bridge. For example:

             10.0.0.0/25
            /
    [Router]
            \
             10.0.0.128/25

The clients has /24 mask configured on their interfaces, the and
the router has proxyarp turned on.
