AHA2940 driver?

I'd like to find out how to go about upgrading the aic7xxx driver for a
2940 on our RH6.1 box so that we can attach two 73 Gig cheetahs. Currenty
we have two 50 Gig cheetahs striped together on this machine and they work
fine, but we'd like more room (always, right?).

When I hook up the 73 Gig cheetahs the machine refuses to boot and goes
into an endless SCSI reset loop. I guessed that the newer drives require an
update of the adaptec driver, so I dutifully followed a RH support page
describing aic7xxx driver updating and ended up having to stay up all night
repairing the damage that caused.

I don't know if it was a corrupt disk image or what, but the install failed
with a kernel panic and an idle task interrupt, whatever that means. After
much flailing around I ended up copying an original aic7xxx.o file from
another machine and "upgraded" the machine to 6.1 off the CD. I'm sure
there are smarter ways to do this, but I'm a Linux neophyte.

Can someone point me in the right direction so I can get these new drives
working? All this drive space just sitting on the shelf is killing me!

I just subscribed to the list so I apologize if this has been discussed
recently but I couldn't find an archive. Is there one?

Thanks,

-terry
