Patches are available against 2.2.16, 2.2.18, and 2.2.19. The tar file
is meant for reference only (some people are porting this driver to
other OSes) and should not be used to install the driver. If you look
closely at the patch, it fixes bugs in the mid-layer that need to
be corrected for the driver to function correctly.
