Greetings,
I have been running out of options and just subscribed to this list when
I managed to workaround (solve?) my problem. I have a HP Kayak XW model
D5510N which has 2 on-board SCSI controllers: AIC-7880 and AIC-7860. I
have been trying for quite some time to get a stable and consistent
linux installation on this box, but have been running into SCSI
problems.
I just discovered (by accident) that I am able to eliminate most of my
problems by using the "no_reset" option for the aic7xxx driver. I can
further eliminate the cable detection error (INT 50:yes, INT 68:yes, EXT
68: yes) by adding "override_term:0xffff". Interestingly enough, there
is no 68-pin external connection, only 1 68-pin internal connection and
both internal and external 50-pin connections.
I am concerned, though, about the use of "no_reset". What are its
implications? Is there any possible explanations as to why I need to use
this option? Are there any problems that I should expect to see?
Here are details on the system:
CPU: 300 MHz Pentium II
RAM: 128 MB
Disks: 2x Seagate ST34501W
CD-ROM: 24x IDE
LAN: 10/100 AMD 79C970
Video: HP Visualize-FX4 (w/ Texture memory)
Audio: AdLib 1816
The BIOS settings for both the 7880 and 7860 were reset to default
values. I've tried various combinations, but nothing seemed to help.
SCAM (?) is auto-assigning SCSI ID's of 0 and 6 to the 2 drives. There
are no devices attached to the 7860.
With all the searching that I did, I could find no problems with
installs on Kayak XU models. There was nothing I could find on the XW.
(The XW is identical to the XU model, with the exception of the video
card.)
If anyone can shed any light on this I would appreciate it.
Regards,
-chuck
