aic7890/1, wde-9100 & linux

I have a number of linux machines with an aic7890/1 and a Western
Digital wd-9100 harddisk. On half of them it works but on the other
half I'm getting bus resets when mkfs tries to write the superblock.
All this, while running kernel 2.2.2 and driver 5.1.12.
/proc/scsi/aic7xxx/0 says:
