Linux 2.2.0-pre<x>: aic7xxx vs. IDE

I've been having trouble with SCSI probing in 2.2.0-pre7 with my AHA-2940UW.
I've found that if I turn off IDE support, everything works ok, but with IDE
support enabled, whether it's using DMA or not, the SCSI probe is never
completed successfully: it either hangs, gets stuck in an infinite abort/retry
loop, or panics. If I compile IDE support as a module, everything works fine
until the IDE module is loaded, then I get the abort/retry loop, sometimes
ending in a kernel panic.

The IDE controller is a Promise DC20246 Ultra33 Ultra-ATA adapter, an add-on
PCI card. I suspect that the problems are due to some recent changes to
DC20246 support, because I run into these problems even using the same aic7xxx
version that works fine with 2.0.35.

Can anyone else out there shed any light on this? Is there anyone with a
DC20246 that works with aic7xxx in a recent Linux kernel? Do others who have
been having trouble with aic7xxx have similar IDE setups--or not?
