There is an update to the Red Hat Linux 5.2 boot disk on the Red Hat ftp
site.  It includes and updated aic7xxx driver that should solve your problem. 
>From the sounds of things, there shouldn't be any need for you to choke down
the device negotiation speeds in the Adaptec BIOS, your system should probably
run at full speed with the updated driver.
