Reminds me just of what my Quantum drive did all the time. Try a look in the
logfiles. Mine gave me a queue full error.
This happened because the drive (not the adapter) had a buggy firmware (Rev.
L912) and the problem vanished when I installed a new firmware on the drive.

My Quantum is a: VP32170, now Rev: L915, but just maybe it's the same problem.
Somewhere on the Quantum Homepage you can find links to firmware upgrades...
If you don't think this is what happens on your system, please give more
details from the errorlogs of the aic7xxx-driver.
