Help - Cannot format large partition.

I am trying to install RedHat 4.2 onto a Micropolis 1991 HD. I have
three of these drives running now with no problems.

When I install the software, there is no problem formatting partitions
under 1gig. As soon as I try to go over 1 gig I get
    Couldn't get free page .....
while trying to write the inodes using mke2fs -c /dev/sda3

If I try a larger partition, the SCSI bus just starts resetting and looping.

This is the stalk RH4.2 install from the CD using either a 2940/2940U or
a 2940AU controller.

Will I have to change the setting in the source code and then recompile
the kernel? I shouldn't have to since I have formatted a full 1991 using
the same install from the same CD.

I have tried moving and rerouting the cables.
Changing termination power on the drive.
Formatting the partitions while doing the install.

All ending with a kernel panic.

Need to build a server with this drive ASAP and require any help or
pointers possible.
