A not unreasonable solution would be to configure the controller in the middle
as always terminated, and then plug and unplug the scanner freely.  The
auto-termination facility in the scanner is probably very dumb, simply sensing
whether both of its connectors are used or not.  If you over-terminate the SCSI
bus, the effect will be much less severe than if you under-terminate it.
