aic7xxx / AHA2940 worries... anyone?

OK...I just made a few modifcations to the patch I posted earlier at the 
suggestion of Justin Gibbs (some race protection stuff).  I think I 
mentioned when I sent it out that I threw it together as a quick test :)  
Anyway, here's the better version of the patch :)
