Full disclosure: a while ago I discussed this topic on netbsd-users[0] and
although the thread appear to to be inconclusive, Manuel Bouyer was able to fix
this in NetBSD. Afterwards I opened an OpenBSD bug[1] for the same issue and
summarized the NetBSD story there, but nothing came of it.

So, thanks for taking a stab at this, maybe these pointers are helpful!
